in de race om de Zuidpool te veroveren, doemden drie namen groot op: Ernest Shackleton, Robert Falcon Scott en Roald Amundsen.
De Endurance werd op 17 december 1912 onder de naam "Polaris" te water gelaten. Oorspronkelijk getuigd als een fregat, werd ze omgebouwd tot een barkentijn met drie masten en in 1914 sloot ze zich aan bij de beroemde Trans-Antarctic Imperial Expedition om Antarctica over te steken onder het commando van Sir Ernest Shackleton.
Nadat de expeditie op 19 augustus 1915 schipbreuk leed, kwam de Endurance vast te zitten in het ijs van de Weddellzee. 522 dagen lang trotseerden de ontdekkingsreizigers winden tot 300 km/u en temperaturen van 40 graden onder nul.
Shackleton en een paar uitgekozen mannen namen een kleine boot, de James Caird, en maakten een van de meest gedenkwaardige en heldhaftige reizen uit de zeilgeschiedenis. Samen met hun hele bemanning volbrachten ze de belangrijkste prestatie van allemaal... overleven.
De expeditie wordt herinnerd als een episch verhaal van uithoudingsvermogen, heldendom en overleven.
